Cardinal’s Jason Trigg masters his own shrinkage to tackle London Marathon and raise money for Meningitis Now!
Total loss is the current mantra of the LP industry – but for one leading sector professional it has become a personal journey.
Jason Trigg, CEO of The Cardinal Group was always a giant in the industry, but two years ago he set himself a target of being one of the LP’s ‘smallest executives’.
Now having lost over 105 lbs (7.5 stone) in the last 18 months, Jason who is 42 next month has set himself his biggest challenge – the 2016 London Marathon in April where he will be aiming to raise thousands of pounds for charity Meningitis Now!
“With less than 13 weeks to go and my marathon training programme in full swing, I am really looking forward to the challenge, he said this week.
“Having reached the big 40 in 2014 and taking stock of my life, health and wellbeing, I now follow a very simple, yet effective food regime that mainly consists of high protein and the good carbs and exercise 3-4 times a week.
“I have had to work hard to keep focused and motivated to carry on when previously faddy diets and no exercise had not had any effect at all. I am now stronger, leaner and fitter than I can ever remember being. Running is something that I never thought would happen, so I hope my story inspires those that need to focus on improving their own health and fitness – If I can do it, anyone can!
Never one to do things in half measures, Jason completed the 13.1 mile Hampton Court half marathon in 2.2 hours on February 22nd 2015 and will be revisiting the same event this year on 21st February as part of his warm up prior to taking part in the London Marathon on April 24th.
“I am raising money for Meningitis Now! because I've seen first hand how it can affect people and their families. Luckily, those I know who have had it are still here, but it could have very easily been a whole different situation.”
So far Jason’s fund raising efforts have raised over £4,000 after the daughter of his PA, Fiona Whelan was struck down by the disease in 2014. Katie Turner, 20, was lucky to make a full recovery and was present at the Hampton court half marathon to cheer Jason on after she survived two attacks of meningitis, one of which was the deadly meningococcal strain.
Fiona said: “Jason wanted to run for a worthy cause and I was absolutely thrilled that he chose Meningitis Now!
Like many epiphanies, the inspiration is work-related. A self-confessed workaholic, Jason has thrown himself into a number of loss prevention initiatives that tackle the issue of shrink in a holistic way and he has managed to achieve his own personal goals by applying the same grit and determination.
“To make a difference in our sector, you have to do more than arrest shoplifters. You have to look to your own behaviours and those of your staff and make deployment of resource judgements based upon intelligence-led solutions. This means retailers having to forensically interrogate their own procedures and processes and make ‘total loss’ assessments of both malicious and non-malicious shrinkage. This starts with accurate stock files and finishes with accountability for every item and greater availability and sales. In this brave new world, LP moves from a cost to the business to a revenue-generation stream.
“I have changed my behaviour and now look at my life and health in a holistic way. The only difference is that my own personal focus is to increase my shrinkage, not halt it!”
